Το μεγαλύτερο τσουνάμι των τελευταίων 65 ετών στον Ελλαδικό χώρο ήταν αυτό που επακολούθησε του φονικού σεισμού 7 ρίχτερ στην Σάμο στις 30 Οκτώβρη, αποδεικνύει νέα έρευνα στην οποία συμμετείχαν ο καθηγητής Ευθύμιος Λέκκας και συνεργάτες του από τον Τομέα Δυναμικής Τεκτονικής Εφαρμοσμένης Γεωλογίας του ΕΚΠΑ (Μ. Γώγου, Σ. Μαυρούλης, Ι. Τριανταφύλλου), ο δρ Γεράσιμος Παπαδόπουλος, επιστημονικός συνεργάτης της ΕΕ και της UNESCO για θέματα τσουνάμι, και ο Μ. Θράβαλος, φοιτητής Φυσικής.

Το ύψος του τσουνάμι έφτασε τα 3,35 μέτρα στον παραθαλάσσιο οικισμό του Αγίου Νικολάου που απέχει 5 χλμ από την πόλη του Καρλοβάσου και μέσα στο Καρλόβασι έφτασε στο 1,80 , ενώ το παλιρροϊκό κύμα στην πόλη της Σάμου έφτασε τα 2 μέτρα ύψος σε μια έκταση δυο χιλιομέτρων.

Σύμφωνα με τον κ. Παπαδοπουλο η ζημιά που προκλήθηκε δεν ήταν τόσο μεγάλη σε σχέση με το μέγεθος του τσουνάμι καθώς η ανύψωση της Σάμου κατά 15-25 εκατοστά από τον Βορρά ως τον Νότο, η οποία καταγράφηκε, προφύλαξε το νησί από μεγαλύτερες καταστροφές.

Το δεύτερο τσουνάμι ήταν το πιο ισχυρό και σημειώθηκε 25 λεπτά περίπου μετά τον σεισμό ,προκαλώντας μεγάλες ζημιές σε επιχειρήσεις και σπίτια της παραλιακής λεωφόρου.
