Μια νεά θεραπεία γεννά ελπίδες για την καταπολέμηση του AIDS.

Ένας 44χρονος Βρετανός είναι ο πρώτος από τους 50 ασθενείς που ολοκλήρωσαν την κλινική δοκιμή μιας νέας φιλόδοξης θεραπείας, η οποία αποτελεί συνεργασία των πέντε κορυφαίων βρετανικών πανεπιστημίων (Κέμπριτζ, Οξφόρδης, Imperial, University College και King’s College Λονδίνου), με χρηματοδότηση από το Εθνικό Σύστημα Υγείας της Βρετανίας.

Η νέα θεραπεία είναι η πρώτη που φαίνεται ότι εξαφάνισε τον ιό HIV παντού στο σώμα του ασθενούς, ακόμη και εκείνα τα κύτταρα που κρύβονται και βρίσκονται σε ύπνωση, ξεφεύγοντας έτσι από τις έως τώρα θεραπείες.

Ο εν λόγω ασθενής εμφανίζει εντυπωσιακή βελτίωση και οι γιατροί δήλωσαν ότι, μετά τη θεραπεία, δεν μπορούν να ανιχνεύσουν τον ιό στον οργανισμό. Αν συνεχιστεί και στο μέλλον, τότε θα μιλήσουν για την πρώτη πλήρη θεραπεία ενός ασθενούς, τονίζουν.

Πρόκειται για μια από τις πρώτες σοβαρές απόπειρες πλήρους θεραπείας του AIDS. Αναζητούμε την πραγματική δυνατότητα θεραπείας του. Είναι μια τεράστια πρόκληση και βρισκόμαστε ακόμη στην αρχή, αλλά ήδη η πρόοδος είναι αξιοσημείωτη, δήλωσε ο Μαρκ Σάμιουελς, ένας από τους ερευνητές.

Μέχρι σήμερα μόνο ένας άνθρωπος έχει θεραπευθεί από το AIDS, ο Τίμοθι Μπράουν, γνωστός και ως “δεύτερος ασθενής του Βερολίνου”, ο οποίος τo 2008 έλαβε μεταμόσχευση βλαστικών κυττάρων από έναν άνθρωπο που είχε σπάνια φυσική ανοσία απέναντι στον ιό HIV.

Σχεδόν 37 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι ζουν με τον ιό του AIDS σε όλο τον κόσμο σήμερα.
