Αστεροειδής με μέγεθος λεωφορείου πέρασε ξαφνικά ξυστά από τη Γη

Ένας μικρός αστεροειδής μεγέθους λεωφορείου ή κοντέινερ έκανε ένα άκρως κοντινό πέρασμα από τη Γη το βράδυ της Τετάρτης, πλησιάζοντας σε απόσταση μόλις 90.000 χιλιομέτρων ή περίπου το 23% της μέσης απόστασης Γης-Σελήνης.

Είναι αξιοσημείωτο ότι μέχρι πριν λίγες μέρες κανένας αστρονόμος δεν είχε ιδέα ότι ο αστεροειδής πλησίαζε. Πάντως, ο εν λόγω διαστημικός βράχος με την ονομασία “2002 NF” πέρασε με ασφάλεια δίπλα από τον πλανήτη μας.

Οι αστρονόμοι ανακάλυψαν τον ‘ύπουλο’ αστεροειδή στις 4 Ιουλίου με το σύστημα τηλεσκοπίων Pan-STARRS στη Χαβάη. Το μήκος του αστεροειδούς εκτιμάται μεταξύ 5,5 και 12,5 μέτρων, δηλαδή περίπου από ένα λεωφορείο μέχρι ένα κοντέινερ.

Λόγω του μικρού μεγέθους του, ο αστεροειδής δεν πληρούσε τα κριτήρια της NASA για να θεωρηθεί “δυνητικά επικίνδυνος” για τον πλανήτη μας, καθώς για έναν τέτοιο χαρακτηρισμό θα έπρεπε να ξεπερνά τουλάχιστον τα 140 μέτρα. Ο “2022 NF” διαγράφει μια περιφορά πέριξ του Ήλιου κάθε έξι χρόνια.
