Εκατόν είκοσι πέντε πουλιά της Αγκαθοκαλημάνας στο Δέλτα του Έβρου, αριθμός ρεκόρ για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα του πιο θορυβώδους για αυτήν την περίοδο πουλιού, κατέγραψε για την φετινή περίοδο το προσωπικό του Φορέα Διαχείρισης Προστατευόμενων Περιοχών Δέλτα Έβρου και Σαμοθράκης στο πλαίσιο της επιστημονικής παρακολούθησης της Ορνιθοπανίδας .

« Το γεγονός αυτό μας γεμίζει αισιοδοξία και χαρά για την σημαντικότητα του πανέμορφου υγρότοπου μας, αποδεικνύοντας ότι αποτελεί μία από τις πιο σημαντικές περιοχές για το είδος στην Ελλάδα, στο βορειότερο άκρο εξάπλωσής της,» σχολίασε το προσωπικό του Φορέα Διαχείρισης Προστατευόμενων Περιοχών .

Η Αγκαθοκαλημάνα είναι ένα εντυπωσιακό είδος παρυδάτιου πτηνού με ασπρόμαυρο πτέρωμα και αμμοκαστανή ράχη, μακριά μαύρα πόδια και κόκκινα μάτια, το οποίο έρχεται στη χώρα μας κάθε άνοιξη. Το κομψό αυτό πουλί επισκέπτεται παράκτιους υγροτόπους της Θράκης για να αναπαραχθεί  και το φθινόπωρο αναχωρεί πάλι για τον Νότο.
Προτιμά να ζει στα ανοικτά εδάφη και στα έλη, ιδιαίτερα στα αλμυρά. Η Αγκαθοκαλημάνα φτιάχνει τη φωλιά της στο έδαφος και γεννά συνήθως τρία με τέσσερα πιτσιλωτά αυγά που τα κλωσούν και οι δύο γονείς.
Τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει παρατηρηθεί αύξηση στους αριθμούς και στα ενεργά ζευγάρια του είδους στο Δέλτα του Έβρου.
